FAQ
What place value do 4th graders learn?
Fourth graders read, write, and compare multi-digit whole numbers through the hundred-thousands and into the millions. A key idea (CCSS 4.NBT.1) is that a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right — so the 7 in 7,000 is worth ten times the 7 in 700. They also write numbers in expanded form, compare them, and round them.
What is expanded form for big numbers?
Expanded form breaks a number into the value of each digit added together — for example 52,406 = 50,000 + 2,000 + 400 + 6 (places that are zero are skipped). It makes place value visible and is part of CCSS 4.NBT.2. The Expanded Form mode gives a number and a space to write it out.
How do 4th graders round numbers?
Rounding uses the digit just to the right of the place you are rounding to: 5 or more rounds up, 4 or less rounds down (CCSS 4.NBT.3). The Rounding mode tells students which place to round to — nearest ten, hundred, thousand, or ten thousand — and gives a box for the answer.
