What addition do 4th graders learn?

Fourth graders add multi-digit whole numbers fluently using the standard algorithm — lining digits up by place value and carrying (regrouping) from ones to tens to hundreds and beyond. This is CCSS 4.NBT.4. Most problems work with numbers up to about five digits, such as 38,472 + 9,615.

What is the standard algorithm for addition?

The standard algorithm stacks numbers vertically so each place-value column lines up, then adds column by column from right to left, carrying a ten into the next column whenever a column total reaches 10 or more. The stacked (column) layout on this generator gives students that vertical setup to practice.

What is a missing-addend problem?

A missing-addend problem leaves a blank in the equation, such as 4,500 + ▢ = 7,200. Solving it pushes students to use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction — a reasoning skill that strengthens number sense. Turn it on with the “Missing number” option in the horizontal layout.
