FAQ
What spelling skills do 1st graders practice?
Common Core L.1.2d asks first graders to spell untaught words phonetically (sounding them out), and L.1.2e asks them to use conventional spelling for words with common patterns — short-vowel CVC words, silent-e long-vowel words, the sh / ch / th digraphs — and to spell the frequently used sight words from the Dolch and Fry lists. These worksheets cover all four of those word groups.
Which format should I use first?
Start with Write Each Word Three Times — it builds muscle memory for the spelling pattern. Then move to Fill in the Missing Letter so the child has to recall the pattern, not just copy it. Use Unscramble last as a fun review at the end of the week.
Why does Fill in the Missing Letter work the way it does?
The blank is placed on the part of the word that practices the target pattern. CVC words blank the short vowel. Silent-e words blank the final e. Digraph words blank the sh / ch / th. Sight words blank a middle letter. That keeps the worksheet focused on the skill you picked.
Are these worksheets free?
Yes — totally free, no signup, no email. Pick a list and a format, generate a fresh set, and print. The answer key prints on a separate page so you can mark it quickly.
