FAQ
What shapes do first graders learn?
First graders identify and describe common 2-D shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, trapezoid, hexagon) and 3-D shapes (cube, cone, cylinder, sphere, rectangular prism). They learn defining attributes — like the number of sides and corners — under CCSS 1.G.1.
What is the difference between 2-D and 3-D shapes?
2-D (flat) shapes have only length and width — like a circle or square drawn on paper. 3-D (solid) shapes also have depth and can be held — like a cube or ball. The “2-D or 3-D?” mode has students sort shapes into those two groups.
What does “defining attribute” mean?
A defining attribute is something that is always true of a shape — a triangle always has three sides, no matter its color, size, or orientation. The Count the Sides mode builds this idea by asking how many straight sides each 2-D shape has.
