Identify and Sort 2-D vs 3-D Shapes
Under CCSS 2.G.1, second graders recognize and draw shapes by their defining attributes — the number of sides, angles, and faces — and identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. The Name and Count Sides & Vertices modes build that vocabulary for flat (2-D) shapes: a side is a straight edge, and a vertex is a corner where two sides meet, so a hexagon has 6 sides and 6 vertices. The 2-D or 3-D? mode adds solid shapes — cube, cone, cylinder, sphere, rectangular prism, and pyramid — and asks students to sort them. The difference is depth: a 2-D shape is flat and has only length and width, while a 3-D shape can be held and has faces (flat surfaces), edges, and vertices — a cube, for example, has 6 square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. Partition Rectangles and Circles
CCSS 2.G.3 is new this year: partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares and describe them as halves, thirds, and fourths. In the Partition mode, each shape shows how many equal parts to draw — students split a circle into thirds or a rectangle into fourths and see that the whole is made of three thirds or four fourths, and that equal shares of the same whole don’t have to be the same shape. What shapes do second graders learn?
Second graders name and draw 2-D shapes by their attributes — triangles, quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, trapezoid, rhombus), pentagons, and hexagons — and recognize 3-D solids such as cubes, cones, cylinders, spheres, rectangular prisms, and pyramids. Under CCSS 2.G.1 the focus shifts from just naming shapes to describing them by their number of sides, angles, and faces.
What is the difference between sides, vertices, and faces?
A side is a straight edge of a flat (2-D) shape, and a vertex (plural vertices) is a corner where two sides meet — a triangle has 3 sides and 3 vertices. A face is a flat surface on a solid (3-D) shape: a cube has 6 square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. The Sides & Vertices mode builds this attribute vocabulary for 2-D shapes.
How is this different from the 1st grade shapes worksheet?
First grade (1.G.1) is mostly naming shapes and counting sides. Second grade adds counting vertices, sorting 2-D versus 3-D solids, and — new this year under 2.G.3 — partitioning circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths.
