The G clef — lines, spaces and ledger notes from middle C to high C
Every Note, Middle C to High C

The Five Lines & The Four Spaces
Ledger Lines — Below the Staff & Above It
Middle C is the first ledger line below the treble staff — the same note as the first ledger line above the bass staff, which is where the two halves of a grand staff meet.

How to Read Treble Clef Notes
1. Start from the spiral
The treble clef is the G clef: its curl wraps around the second line up, and that line is the G above middle C. That single anchor beats memorising nine separate positions — find G, then step up or down the alphabet, one letter per line-or-space, and you can name anything on the staff even when the mnemonic deserts you mid-piece.
2. Learn the lines and the spaces as two short ladders
Lines are E G B D F — “Every Good Boy Does Fine.” Spaces are F A C E, which needs no sentence because it spells the word. Say both in reverse as well — lines top-down are F D B G E, spaces are E C A F — until downward is as quick as upward. Most sight-reading mistakes are on the way down.
3. Use middle C to join the two staves
Middle C is the first ledger line below the treble staff and the first ledger line above the bass staff — one note, written two ways. Piano students who see it that way stop treating the bass clef as a separate language. Print a page of grand-staff paper and write the same C in both clefs a few times to fix it.
4. Add rhythm and key once the letters are automatic
Naming notes is only half of reading. The note values chart covers how long each one lasts, the circle of fifths tells you which of them carry a sharp or flat all the way through a piece, and music theory basics ties the intervals and dynamics to the same page of music.
Standards Alignment
Music sits outside the Common Core, which covers only English language arts and mathematics — the national benchmark for note reading is the National Core Arts Standards (NCAS, 2014), the music strand of which is published by NAfME. Naming the lines and spaces of the treble staff is the skill behind Performing anchor standard 4:
- MU:Pr4.2.3b — “When analyzing selected music, read and perform rhythmic patterns and melodic phrases using iconic and standard notation.”
- MU:Pr4.2.5b — “When analyzing selected music, read and perform using standard notation.”
- MU:Pr4.2.8b — “When analyzing selected music, sight-read in treble or bass clef simple rhythmic, melodic, and/or harmonic notation.”
Standard notation is introduced around grade 3 and expected without iconic support by grade 5, so this chart is the reference to leave on the stand from third grade onward.

FAQ
What are the notes on the treble clef?
The five lines from bottom to top are E, G, B, D, F. The four spaces between them are F, A, C, E. Read straight up the staff, alternating line and space, and you get E F G A B C D E F — plain alphabetical order, because that is all a staff ever is. The bottom line is the E just above middle C; the top line is the F an octave and a fourth above it.
What is the mnemonic for treble clef lines and spaces?
For the lines (E G B D F): "Every Good Boy Does Fine" or "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge." The spaces need no sentence at all — F, A, C, E spells FACE, which is also where they sit. Practise both in reverse too: the lines top-down are F D B G E, and the spaces are E C A F.
Where is middle C in treble clef?
One ledger line below the treble staff, just under the bottom line. That is the same pitch as the note one ledger line above the bass staff — on a grand staff a single middle C sits between the two, which is why the two clefs meet there.
Why is the treble clef called the G clef?
Because it points at G. The clef's spiral curls around the second line up, naming it as the G above middle C — the line the curl centres on is the note. Once you can find that line, every other note is a walk up or down the alphabet from it, which is also why the same symbol drawn on the bottom line makes a French violin clef.
How is treble clef different from bass clef?
Five lines and four spaces either way — only the names change. Treble lines are E G B D F, bass lines are G B D F A: the same alphabet started two letters later. The pitches are much higher too. The treble staff's bottom line, E, already sits above middle C, while the bass staff's top line, A, is still a third below it.
How do I read the ledger-line notes above the treble staff?
Keep the alphabet going upward. The space sitting just above the top line is G, the first ledger line above is A, the gap over it is B, the second ledger line is C — the C two octaves above middle C — then D, and E on the third ledger line. Count the ledger lines rather than the gaps and you will not lose your place.
Is this treble clef notes chart free to print?
Yes — click Print or Download PDF and the whole chart lands on one US Letter page. No signup, no watermark, and no limit on copies for your classroom or studio.
