Bass Clef Notes Chart
The F clef — lines, spaces and ledger notes from low C to middle C
Every Note, Low C to Middle C
The clef's two dots straddle the 4th line — that line is F. Every other note is one letter of the alphabet per step, line to space to line.
The Five Lines & The Four Spaces
Ledger Lines — Below the Staff & Above It
Middle C is the first ledger line above the bass staff — the same note as the first ledger line below the treble staff, which is where the two halves of a grand staff meet.

How to Read Bass Clef Notes
1. Start from the two dots
The bass clef is the F clef: its two dots sit either side of the fourth line, and that line is the F below middle C. That single anchor beats memorising nine separate positions — find F, then step up or down the alphabet, one letter per line-or-space, and you can name anything on the staff even when the mnemonic deserts you mid-piece.
2. Learn the lines and the spaces as two short ladders
Lines are G B D F A — “Good Boys Do Fine Always.” Spaces are A C E G— “All Cows Eat Grass.” Unlike the treble clef's FACE, the bass spaces do not spell a word, so say the sentence in both directions until top-down is as quick as bottom-up. Most sight-reading mistakes are on the way down.
3. Use middle C to join the two staves
Middle C is the first ledger line above the bass staff and the first ledger line below the treble staff — one note, written two ways. Piano students who see it that way stop treating the left hand as a separate language. Print a page of grand-staff paper and write the same C in both clefs a few times to fix it.
4. Add rhythm and key once the letters are automatic
Naming notes is only half of reading. The note values chart covers how long each one lasts, the circle of fifths tells you which of them carry a sharp or flat all the way through a piece, and music theory basics ties the intervals and dynamics to the same page of music.

FAQ
What are the notes on the bass clef?
The five lines from bottom to top are G, B, D, F, A. The four spaces between them are A, C, E, G. Read straight up the staff, alternating line and space, and you get G A B C D E F G A — plain alphabetical order, because that is all a staff ever is. The bottom line is the G an octave and a fourth below middle C; the top line is the A a third below middle C.
What is the mnemonic for bass clef lines and spaces?
For the lines (G B D F A): "Good Boys Do Fine Always," "Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always," or "Grizzly Bears Don't Fear Anything." For the spaces (A C E G): "All Cows Eat Grass" or "All Cars Eat Gas." The spaces do not spell a word the way the treble clef's FACE does, so the sentence does the work in both directions.
Where is middle C in bass clef?
One ledger line above the bass staff, just over the top line. That is the same pitch as the note one ledger line below the treble staff — on a grand staff a single middle C sits between the two, which is why the two clefs meet there.
Why is the bass clef called the F clef?
Because it points at F. The clef's curl starts on the fourth line up and its two dots sit either side of that line, naming it as the F below middle C. Once you can find that line, every other note is a walk up or down the alphabet from it — which is also why the clef used to be drawn on other lines to shift the whole staff.
How is bass clef different from treble clef?
Five lines and four spaces either way — only the names change. Treble lines are E G B D F, bass lines are G B D F A: the same alphabet started two letters later. The pitches are much lower too. The treble staff's bottom line, E, already sits above middle C, while the bass staff's top line, A, is still a third below it.
How do I read the ledger-line notes below the bass staff?
Keep the alphabet going downward. The space hanging just under the bottom line is F, the first ledger line below is E, the gap under it is D, the second ledger line is C — the cello and bass guitar's low C — then B, and A on the third ledger line. Count the ledger lines rather than the gaps and you will not lose your place.
