FAQ
What time-telling skills do 2nd graders learn?
Second grade extends telling time from the hour and half-hour to the nearest five minutes, on both analog and digital clocks, and adds labelling times as a.m. or p.m. That is the whole of CCSS 2.MD.7. Students skip-count by fives around the clock face to read the minute hand, which is why the clocks here can print with the five-minute numbers shown outside the ring.
How do I teach reading a clock to the nearest five minutes?
Start with the minute hand alone: have the child skip-count by fives — 5, 10, 15 — from the 12 around to wherever the long hand points. Then read the hour as the number the short hand has already passed. A common slip is reading 3:50 as 4:50 because the hour hand sits close to the 4, so it helps to say “it hasn't gotten there yet.” Print the “Draw the hands” mode too — producing a time is harder than reading one and exposes gaps quickly.
How do you explain a.m. and p.m. to a child?
a.m. covers midnight through just before noon, and p.m. covers noon through just before midnight. Anchoring it to the child's own day works better than the Latin: breakfast and the school bus are a.m., dinner and bedtime are p.m. The “a.m. or p.m.” mode does exactly that — it shows a clock next to a familiar daily activity, and the child writes the time and circles the right label.
What is the difference between the three worksheet modes?
Read the clock shows an analog clock and asks for the digital time. Draw the hands gives a digital time and a blank clock face to fill in. a.m. or p.m. pairs a clock with an everyday activity so students write the time and circle a.m. or p.m. Using all three covers reading, writing, and applying time — the three verbs in CCSS 2.MD.7.
