Best Cardstock for Printables & Worksheets

Plain copy paper is fine for a one-and-done worksheet, but if you're printing flash cards, center cards, bookmarks, or anything you'll laminate and reuse, cardstock is worth the small upgrade. It feels sturdier, doesn't curl when laminated, and stands up to repeated use. The catch: "cardstock" covers a wide range of weights and finishes. Here's how to pick the right one for your printables.
Cardstock weight, explained simply
Cardstock is usually sold by "cover" weight in pounds. Higher number = thicker, stiffer paper. For classroom and home printables, two weights cover almost everything:
- 65 lb cover — the everyday sweet spot. Noticeably sturdier than copy paper but still light enough to feed reliably through any home printer. Ideal for flash cards, worksheets, name tags, and most laminating.
- 80 lb cover— heavier and stiffer, closer to a greeting card. Great for game boards, bookmarks, and task cards that get handled hard. Check your printer's max paper weight first; some entry-level printers struggle past 65 lb.
You may also see cardstock listed in gsm (grams per square meter). As a rough guide, 65 lb cover is about 176 gsm and 80 lb cover is about 216 gsm.
Bright white vs. colored
Bright whitecardstock makes black ink crisp and colors accurate — it's the default for worksheets, flash cards, and anything text-heavy. Look for a high brightness rating (around 94–98) for the cleanest contrast. Colored cardstock shines for color-coding: assign a color to each learning center, sorting set, or reading group so materials are instantly recognizable.

Inkjet vs. laser: does it matter?
Most quality cardstock works in both, but a couple of notes help. Laser printers fuse toner with heat, so very glossy or coated cardstock can sometimes flake — stick to uncoated "smooth" stock. Inkjets lay down wet ink, so dense color prints on cardstock may need a minute to dry before stacking. When in doubt, run one test sheet before committing a whole batch.
